Some studies have reported that the average American gains about 5 pounds per holiday season. While I believe that number is a bit high, it’s no contest that the excess celebration, and dare I say temptation, inevitably leads to some sort of weight gain for most of us. With friends and family coming in from out of town, we’ve all got a lot going on, like holiday parties, family dinners, wine tasting with your girlfriends, or bar crawls with your old pals. All of these social gatherings revolve around food and drink. It’s just the way our society passes the time. Honestly, I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing on occasion.
From Native American rituals to ancient Egyptian practices, and even in the Bible, our ancestors have used food to celebrate, appreciate and connect with each other for thousands of years. Only in recent years has our weight gain and obesity gotten out of control. What’s the root cause of all this? What’s changed? Well, we’ve talked about this before and it’s pretty simple. Unlike our ancestors of the past, we have high-calorie, low-nutrient, processed food on demand at all times, and we get very little exercise or physical activity whatsoever. Did early cave men (and women) relax and have some big meals every now and then? Absolutely. To put things in comparison however, I’m willing to bet that the average day for an American today is very similar to what our ancestors would describe as a “day off.” (I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long time since I’ve hunted wild game with a club, or built a home out of bamboo.)
In addition to using food as a celebration, our ancestors also used FASTING as a way to “cleanse” their bodies, their spirits, and to find balance. It’s kind of funny how different cultures around the world, who have supposedly never met, sometimes come to the same conclusions. Now, beyond any religious or spiritual benefits, scientists the world over are finally noting the PHYSICAL benefits of fasting. Short periods of “liquid-only-dieting,” also known as intermittent fasting, have been shown to:
- Increase cognitive function and boost mental clarity
- Boost immunity and white blood cell count
- Increase testosterone
- Improve sleep
- Reduce psychological dependence on food
- Reduce psychological food cravings
Three years ago, a 5 day juice fast changed my life forever. Since then, I’ve put together the Alpha Reset, and you can have it for FREE. This will help you get started on your journey.
So when I’m asked “Drew, how can I avoid weight gain during the holidays?” my answer is usually the same as any other time of the year: Fill up on micronutrient dense superfoods, drink a lot of water, and stay active. Surround yourself with positive people. Be present. Enjoy the moment. The laughter, the tears, the smiles, and hugs of your loved ones. Don’t use food to escape. Don’t eat out of boredom. It’s okay to taste your mother’s new recipe, without eating an entire plateful. Bring healthy snacks with you if you need.
If you’re a newbie to this whole healthy and nutritious lifestyle, and you don’t think you can handle the temptation, or you have a lot of weight you are trying to lose, well I’m sure your family and friends will understand if you’d prefer to sit this one out. There were a few times I skipped Christmas AND Thanksgiving with the family because I just didn’t want to slip. At all. My taste buds hadn’t been fully trained, and I still looked at comfort food as comfort, instead of seeing it for what it really was for me: an escape from reality, an addiction, a catalyst for sliding back into my old unhappy life, and possibly even an eventual cause of disease.
The most important thing about holidays is being thankful, present in the moment, and sharing our love and appreciation for each other. Trust me, whether you decide to brown-bag-it for your holiday, stay home and watch Roseanne re-runs, or look your grandmother straight in the eye and say “no pie for me this year, gram” you will be okay. Life will go on. Your friends, family, and loved ones will understand and respect you for taking care of your body and your health.
So after the holidays are over, do yourself a favor: Give away all those pies or cookies to someone else in need, and join me (with your doctor’s permission) in a Holiday Weight Burning Juice Fast. We’re gonna purge our body of the toxins, GMO’s, and sugars that snuck into the last weeks meals with the following ingredients:
- Handful dandelion greens
- 1/2 red pepper
- Celery stalk
- 1 lemon
- 1/2 apple
- 1 cucumber
- 2 tbsp chlorella powder
- Prepare every ingredient as well as the juicer.
- Add everything into the juicer excluding the chlorella powder.
- Make sure you extract the juice properly.
- Transfer in a clean, glass container.
- Add the 2 tbsp chlorella powder, mix until properly dissolved into the juice.
- Drink and enjoy your juice!
So hopefully by now, all of the left-overs are gone, and those sweet, sugary treats have been given to someone in need. If you’re anything like me, lounging around is great, but after a while, I need to get out of the house and be active. Since the new year just started, it’s a GREAT idea to jump on our 90 day challenge, and start the year off strong for our health and fitness. We’ve already got a TON of people signed up, so PLEASE if you were considering taking that step, starting to eat healthy, treating your body right, well my friend, there is no better time than now. And no better way to make a HUGE lasting impact than by challenging yourself. This year, we’re giving away juicers, $2,000 in cash, water ionizers, and an infrared sauna! Make use of this information to hype up your very own detoxification! Start now!
The detoxification process can also take in the form of a juice fast. Here at FitLife.TV, we recommend people to try the Alpha Reset (AR). The Alpha Reset is a 5 Day Juice Fast. It is part of the Juice with Drew System. This is the first step in your detoxification process. If you are just starting out with juicing, do not jump right into a juice fast right away. Just try 1 juice per day along with the rest of your nutrition and see how your body responds. If your body responds well to juicing, then ramp up the number of juices per day. These healthy, nutrient-dense juices can replace that coffee you reach for in the morning or that soda in the afternoon. Here are some of our followers that have tried the Alpha Reset!
